This gem was built in the 18th century by Sir Robert Walpole. Original designs were by Colen Campbell and later renovated by Thomas Ripley and the interior decoration was completed by William Kent. It is very close to two very famous castles- Sandringham and Holkham Hall which are all nearby to King’s Lynn, one of England’s most prosperous ports during the Middle Ages. Some warehouses from this period still exist near the River Ouse.
Touted as the most exemplary type of Palladian architecture in England, the castle was inherited by Sir Robert Cholmondeley’s daughter, the Marquess. Besides containing the wonderful collections of furniture, portraits and china, a private collection of 20,000 military models- soldiers and artifacts- are housed here. You can inspect, in detail, the wonderful interior of Houghton Hall by going to www.houghtonhall.com and clicking on Hall. The Green Velvet Bedchamber is particularly beautiful and interesting. The grounds also contain a five-acre walled garden and a newly renovated ha-ha.
The Hall is situated 13 miles east of King’s Lynn and can be accessed from the A148.
Opening times are April 15th through September 30th, Sundays and Thursdays from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
