Look Back in Awe

With the playoffs now a not so pleasant memory in the short distance, I decided to write a few thoughts on this season that might have escaped even the most astute fans of the Nuggets. I consider myself a supporting fan of these extremely talented players and I see so much hometown flak in the local papers about one player in particular that I thought I would put forward some facts that might make each and every fan feel a little better and make our opponents extremely jealous after all.
Carmelo Anthony is a good one to start with because he’s just so great at what he does and his point making is phenomenal. A good example of the defense myth is his overall record. Everyone should check his stats with the NBA sometime to give them a reminder of what it takes to be a good basketball player. Defense is definitely important but offense is what wins the game. Period. Nevertheless, his defense tactics and rebounds and steals sometimes go unnoticed except by the few.
I’m sure everybody is looking askance at the fiasco with the Jazz at the playoffs but does anybody remember the October 28th game in 2009 against the Jazz? Carmelo scored 30 points in that game and made 8 rebounds and five assists for that season opener. Against the Trailblazers the next night he scored 41 points which included 18 for 19 from the foul line including 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in a landmark win ! By November 10th he scored his 11,000th career point during a game against The Bulls becoming the third youngest player in NBA history to reach the 11,000th point plateau which puts him only behind LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, of course ! When the Nuggets took on the Lakers November 13th, Melo scored 25 points which is a modest score for him but the fact is that the points were made on 11-for-20 shooting. Just a few short months ago- early February- in a game against The Lakers, six of the Nuggets players reached double figures against the Lakers with Carmelo out of the game entirely ! The Nuggets won that Friday night 126-113 !

Back last December 5th, 2009, Melo scored 34 points against the Spurs, made seven rebounds and that in a relatively short 42 minutes !  The next day he was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for October and November ranking first in NBA scoring once again with 31.0 and setting a new team record for most consecutive 20 point performances to begin a regular season. He was solidly responsible for leading the Nuggets to its first 3-0 start since the 1985-86 season and only the fourth 3-0 start in the teams history!
When the Nuggets played the Jazz again on January 17th of this current year, he scored 37 points in that game- his career high at that time- which included 8 rebounds and won the game for them. Is it any wonder they had every reason to believe they could beat the pants off of the Jazz ? Carmelo hit 40 points at the February 18th game against The Cavs. At this particular game he made seven assists and they won the game. Even within his own team his PPG (points per game average) beats out the best players including Chauncey Billups whose average is 20.3 where Melo’s is 30.7 so far this year. Only K-Mart (Kenyon Martin) matches his total rebounds in offense and defensive playing.
Speaking of Billups, he also was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, Jan. 18 through Sunday, Jan. 24 of this year.
Billups contributed to the 3-0 record by averaging 25.7 ppg, 7.7 apg and 5.3 rpg. As point guard his shooting was .524 (22-42) from the field, .591 (13-22) from three-point range and .909 (20-22) from the foul line. In Oakland on January 20th, he posted a career-high-tying 37 points, made 8 rebounds and 8 assists against the Warriors. The very next night in Denver he scored 20 points and made 6 assists in only 30 minutes in the Clippers game and then closed out the week with 20 points, 9 assists and 5 boards against New Orleans at the Pepsi Center on January 23rd ! This marks the fifth Player of the Week honor for Billups during his 13-year NBA career – second time in the Western Conference. Prior to this past week, he had received the award three times with the Detroit Pistons (2/2/03, 11/23/03 and 3/21/05) and once as a Nugget (11/16/08).
Billups’ received the honor one week after Carmelo Anthony, giving Denver its second-ever back-to-back P.O.W. honorees. Alex English and Fat Lever were recognized in consecutive weeks for the Nuggets during the 1986-87 season (1/25/87 and 2/1/87) so you can see what class the Nuggets are sitting with lately.
Now Birdman…. well, it’s best that you just see for yourself. Brrrrr ! hee hee hee……
