and other great news…
Back in November I put up an entry about several topics in sports but wrote at length about the disappearance of Birdman Chris Andersen after the Nuggets opted out of his contract. Coach Karl hadn’t been giving him any amount of time on the court through a good part of 2012 and I was very concerned when some strange investigation at his house resulted in a confiscated computer and a search for someone who lived at his house ensued. There was no investigation on him per se but very little was said or known apparently.
Even though I don’t know any more than I found out this summer I am relieved to find out that he’s back on the courts with the Miami Heat- of all teams- and doing quite well I hear, if stats don’t lie. This time around he’s been signed with two 10-day contracts with Miami Heat and even though he’s been given the low seat he’s in the company of the champs of the NBA. He’s been back on the court since February and averaging 3.7 points and 4 rebounds per game but only being allowed about ten minutes per game. That’s certainly better than sitting on a bench- a judge’s or courtside- especially since his efficiency rating ( a brand new high tech system) is 19.7 which is quite high. On February 8th he played 18 minutes on the court in a win against the L.A. Clippers. It’s certain to give the Heat some energy and spunk on the court of which he always adds. Oh- his new do ain’t too shabby either !
Meanwhile, the Nuggets are breaking records with their fourteen games winning streak ! With a victory against the OK Thunder on their own court plus the last win against the 76ers it’s time to take a closer look at the new Nuggets. Because I am a Denverite my loyalty belongs to them but I always felt that the Nuggets were special. We’ve had some great and also famous players come through our courts. This year, however, is March Madness at its finest. A fourteen game winning streak is nothing to sneeze at especially when those wins include victories against such teams as the Suns, Grizzlies, Knicks, Lakers, Hawks and Kings with the wins against the Knicks and Lakers especially sweet if you look at the roster of prodigious players they have of which the Knicks used to be Nuggets- K-Mart being among them ! ! Denver Nuggets aren’t just red hot, they’ve achieved the ranks of awesome with no egos involved. Ty Lawson seems to be the secret ingredient and Gallinari has held his own for being such a young and still enthusiastic player which gets him a lot of injuries.
I do want to mention that Marcus Camby and his wife were recently honored by VOA for their continued involvement in the Denver outreach for underprivileged youth and needy people. This is made more difficult for them because they are no longer residing in the community. We miss you Marcus ! Also Chauncey Billups was inducted into the high school Hall of Fame back in June when the National Federation of State High School Associations hosted the annual summer meeting. Billups is a former George Washington High School player so he showed promise very early. That induction took place at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Colorado Convention Center. He has been honored with awards many times during his career starting with being a player of the year while he played at GW as a student no less than four times. In addition he received The Denver Post’s Mr. Colorado Basketball award three times and led Colorado to its first NCAA Tournament appearance as a sophomore at CU in Boulder after a 30 year hiatus. During his sixteen years, thus far, of his professional NBA career he has been in the top three first drafts picks ( back in 1997), has played for seven different teams including the Nuggets (twice) and became an NBA Finals MVP, has made five all-star teams and has been named all-NBA three times. He has certainly done his home court proud all these years.
If you want to see some of the recent Nuggets action I’ll be putting many great photos up on my Nuggets album on SkyDrive- soon to be Skype. Hoooo-eee !
