A Clear October Morning…

I chanced upon a poem years ago which expressed my dear love of autumn. I’ve written of it myself in poetry but this has become the quintessential fall rhyme for me. Enjoy along with me ! The Castle Lady

Going a-Nutting
by Edmund Clarence Stedman

No clouds are in the morning sky,
The vapors hug the stream,-
Who says that life and love can die
In all this northern gleam?
At every turn the maples burn,
The quail is whistling free,
The partridge whirs, and the frosted burrs
Are dropping for you and me.
Ho! hilly ho! heigh O!
Hilly ho!
In the clear October morning.
Along our path the woods are bold,
And glow with ripe desire;
The Yellow chestnut showers its fold,
The sumacs spread their fire;
The breezes feel as crisp as steel,
The buckwheat tops are red.
Then down the lane, love, scurry again,
And over the stubble tread!
Ho! hilly ho! heigh O!
Hilly ho!
In the clear October morning.

  1. Richard says:

    Every season has its own attraction. I love autumn for its cool crisp air and the changing colours of the leaves. A stroll along leafy roads in a sunny autumn morning brings unspoken joy. The warmth of a jumper touching the skin gives a comfortable feeling that summer cannot provide.
